How and when to prune yew

Prune

Prune or shear

When: from 4 weeks before the last spring frost until the last spring frost.

  • zones 3โ€“5: about Apr 12 โ€“ May 10
  • zones 6โ€“7: about Mar 18 โ€“ Apr 15

Pruning before the spring flush means new growth quickly hides the cuts.

  1. Shear or hand-prune to shape. Yews can be cut back hard, even to bare wood, and will resprout.
  2. For a big size reduction, cut back by half and expect 2 seasons to fill in.
  3. Optional: a second light trim in early summer.

Tools: Hedge shears, Loppers

Fertilizing yew

Fertilize

Spring feeding

When: from 1 week before to 3 weeks after the last spring frost.

  • zones 3โ€“5: about May 3โ€“31
  • zones 6โ€“7: about Apr 8 โ€“ May 6

A single spring feeding as growth starts covers most shrubs for the year.

  1. Scatter fertilizer at the label rate from near the stems out past the drip line, where the feeder roots are.
  2. Water it in thoroughly.

What to use: ๐ŸŒฟ Balanced organic granular fertilizer (e.g. Espoma Plant-tone 5-3-3) ยท Slow-release balanced fertilizer (e.g. Osmocote Smart-Release 14-14-14)

Common yew problems and how to fix them
