How and when to prune holly

Prune

Winter shaping

When: 4โ€“10 weeks before the last spring frost.

  • zones 3โ€“5: about Mar 1 โ€“ Apr 12
  • zones 6โ€“7: about Feb 4 โ€“ Mar 18
  • zones 8โ€“10: about Dec 17 โ€“ Jan 28

Pruning while dormant keeps a neat shape. Holly buds lie along the stems, so it regrows from cuts.

  1. Cut branches back to just above a leaf node or side branch, keeping the natural pyramidal shape.
  2. Remove crossing branches and any reverting green shoots on variegated plants.
  3. Overgrown hollies tolerate hard renewal pruning in late winter. They'll skip berries for a year.

Tools: Bypass pruners, Loppers, Leather gloves

Fertilizing holly

Fertilize

Spring feeding

When: from 1 week before to 3 weeks after the last spring frost.

  • zones 3โ€“5: about May 3โ€“31
  • zones 6โ€“7: about Apr 8 โ€“ May 6
  • zones 8โ€“10: about Feb 18 โ€“ Mar 18

A single spring feeding as growth starts covers most shrubs for the year.

  1. Scatter fertilizer at the label rate from near the stems out past the drip line, where the feeder roots are.
  2. Water it in thoroughly.

What to use: ๐ŸŒฟ Organic acid-loving plant food (e.g. Espoma Holly-tone 4-3-4) ยท Acid-forming fertilizer (e.g. Miracid 30-10-10 or ammonium sulfate)

Spraying & disease prevention for holly

Spray

Dormant oil spray

When: 2โ€“6 weeks before the last spring frost.

  • zones 3โ€“5: about Mar 29 โ€“ Apr 26
  • zones 6โ€“7: about Mar 4 โ€“ Apr 1
  • zones 8โ€“10: about Jan 14 โ€“ Feb 11

Smothers overwintering scale insects before they hatch. It's the lowest-toxicity insect control you can do all year.

  1. Pick a calm, dry day between 40ยฐF and 70ยฐF (4โ€“21ยฐC) with no freeze forecast for 24 hours.
  2. Mix the oil at the label's dormant rate.
  3. Coat every branch, crotch and bark crevice until it drips.
  4. Spray before buds open. Oil on tender green tissue can burn it.

What to use: ๐ŸŒฟ Horticultural / dormant oil (e.g. Bonide All Seasons Oil)

Caution: Don't use within 2 weeks of a sulfur spray. Don't spray blue spruce or other blue conifers; oil strips their color.

Soil, compost & mulch for holly

Soil & mulch

Refresh mulch

When: 2โ€“6 weeks after the last spring frost.

  • zones 3โ€“5: about May 24 โ€“ Jun 21
  • zones 6โ€“7: about Apr 29 โ€“ May 27
  • zones 8โ€“10: about Mar 11 โ€“ Apr 8

Mulch keeps roots cool and moist, suppresses weeds and slowly feeds the soil. Applying it after the soil warms lets roots wake up first.

  1. Spread 2โ€“3 in (5โ€“7 cm) of mulch over the root zone.
  2. Keep mulch 2โ€“3 in (5โ€“7 cm) away from stems and trunks. Mulch piled against bark invites rot and rodents.
  3. Don't go deeper than 3 in (7 cm) in total. Too much mulch suffocates roots.

What to use: ๐ŸŒฟ Pine straw or pine bark fines (slightly acidifying) ยท ๐ŸŒฟ Shredded hardwood or pine bark mulch
