How and when to prune gardenia
Prune right after flowering
When: 10โ14 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 6โ7: about Jun 24 โ Jul 22
- zones 8โ10: about May 6 โ Jun 3
This shrub sets next year's flower buds over the summer. Pruning within a few weeks after the flowers fade gives the most blooms next year. Prune later and you cut off the buds.
- Wait until the last flowers have faded.
- Remove dead, damaged and crossing branches first.
- Renewal-prune: cut one-third of the oldest, thickest stems right down to the ground. Over three years this replaces the whole shrub with vigorous young wood.
- Shorten overly long stems to an outward-facing bud or side branch to shape the shrub. Avoid shearing it into a ball.
- Prune lightly to shape. Late-summer pruning removes next year's buds.
Tools: Bypass pruners
Fertilizing gardenia
Spring feeding
When: 2โ5 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 29 โ May 20
- zones 8โ10: about Mar 11 โ Apr 1
A single spring feeding as growth starts covers most shrubs for the year.
- Scatter fertilizer at the label rate from near the stems out past the drip line, where the feeder roots are.
- Water it in thoroughly.
What to use: ๐ฟ Organic acid-loving plant food (e.g. Espoma Holly-tone 4-3-4) ยท Acid-forming fertilizer (e.g. Miracid 30-10-10 or ammonium sulfate)
Early-summer feeding
When: 10โ13 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 6โ7: about Jun 24 โ Jul 15
- zones 8โ10: about May 6โ27
A second acid feeding after flowering keeps leaves deep green.
- Apply acid fertilizer at the label rate and water it in. Add chelated iron if leaves are pale.
What to use: ๐ฟ Organic acid-loving plant food (e.g. Espoma Holly-tone 4-3-4) ยท Chelated iron (e.g. Ironite or liquid chelated iron), for yellowing between veins
Soil, compost & mulch for gardenia
Refresh mulch
When: 2โ6 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 29 โ May 27
- zones 8โ10: about Mar 11 โ Apr 8
Mulch keeps roots cool and moist, suppresses weeds and slowly feeds the soil. Applying it after the soil warms lets roots wake up first.
- Spread 2โ3 in (5โ7 cm) of mulch over the root zone.
- Keep mulch 2โ3 in (5โ7 cm) away from stems and trunks. Mulch piled against bark invites rot and rodents.
- Don't go deeper than 3 in (7 cm) in total. Too much mulch suffocates roots.
What to use: ๐ฟ Pine straw or pine bark fines (slightly acidifying) ยท ๐ฟ Shredded hardwood or pine bark mulch
Common gardenia problems and how to fix them
Yellow leaves
Signs: Leaves yellow between green veins.
What to do: The pH is too high. Use acid fertilizer, chelated iron and soil sulfur.
Whitefly / sooty mold
Signs: Tiny white flies, black film on leaves.
What to do: Spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil on the leaf undersides.
Bud drop
Signs: Buds fall unopened.
What to do: Caused by irregular watering, temperature swings or low humidity.
