Camellia care guide: when & how to prune, fertilize and spray
Camellia japonica / C. sasanqua ยท USDA zones 7โ10
Glossy evergreen shrubs flowering from fall (sasanqua) through late winter (japonica). Prune lightly right after flowering, feed with acid fertilizer, and watch for tea scale.
โ๏ธ Sun
Morning sun and afternoon shade.
๐ง Water
Even moisture, especially while buds form in late summer. Dry soil then causes bud drop.
๐ชฑ Soil
pH 5.5โ6.5. Rich, acidic, well-drained. Pine bark fines and compost. Plant slightly high.
How and when to prune camellia
Prune right after flowering
When: from 2 weeks before to 4 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 1 โ May 13
- zones 8โ10: about Feb 11 โ Mar 25
This shrub sets next year's flower buds over the summer. Pruning within a few weeks after the flowers fade gives the most blooms next year. Prune later and you cut off the buds.
- Wait until the last flowers have faded.
- Remove dead, damaged and crossing branches first.
- Renewal-prune: cut one-third of the oldest, thickest stems right down to the ground. Over three years this replaces the whole shrub with vigorous young wood.
- Shorten overly long stems to an outward-facing bud or side branch to shape the shrub. Avoid shearing it into a ball.
- Camellias don't need much: thin the interior for airflow and shorten wayward shoots.
Tools: Bypass pruners
Fertilizing camellia
Spring feeding
When: 2โ6 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 29 โ May 27
- zones 8โ10: about Mar 11 โ Apr 8
A single spring feeding as growth starts covers most shrubs for the year.
- Scatter fertilizer at the label rate from near the stems out past the drip line, where the feeder roots are.
- Water it in thoroughly.
What to use: ๐ฟ Organic acid-loving plant food (e.g. Espoma Holly-tone 4-3-4) ยท Acid-forming fertilizer (e.g. Miracid 30-10-10 or ammonium sulfate)
Spraying & disease prevention for camellia
Oil spray for tea scale
When: 2โ5 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 29 โ May 20
- zones 8โ10: about Mar 11 โ Apr 1
Tea scale is the most common camellia pest. Oil smothers the crawlers.
- Spray horticultural oil (summer rate) on the leaf undersides on a mild day below 85ยฐF/29ยฐC.
What to use: ๐ฟ Horticultural / dormant oil (e.g. Bonide All Seasons Oil)
Soil, compost & mulch for camellia
Refresh mulch
When: 2โ6 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 29 โ May 27
- zones 8โ10: about Mar 11 โ Apr 8
Mulch keeps roots cool and moist, suppresses weeds and slowly feeds the soil. Applying it after the soil warms lets roots wake up first.
- Spread 2โ3 in (5โ7 cm) of mulch over the root zone.
- Keep mulch 2โ3 in (5โ7 cm) away from stems and trunks. Mulch piled against bark invites rot and rodents.
- Don't go deeper than 3 in (7 cm) in total. Too much mulch suffocates roots.
What to use: ๐ฟ Pine straw or pine bark fines (slightly acidifying) ยท ๐ฟ Shredded hardwood or pine bark mulch
Common camellia problems and how to fix them
Tea scale
Signs: White, cottony specks on leaf undersides; yellow blotches on top.
What to do: Horticultural oil spray in spring after bloom and again in fall, covering the leaf undersides.
Bud drop
Signs: Buds fall before opening.
What to do: Caused by irregular watering in late summer and fall, or a hard freeze.
