How and when to prune rhododendron
Deadhead and light prune after flowering
When: 5โ9 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about Jun 14 โ Jul 12
- zones 6โ7: about May 20 โ Jun 17
- zones 8โ10: about Apr 1โ29
Snapping off spent trusses puts energy into next year's buds instead of seed.
- Carefully snap off each faded flower truss at its base with finger and thumb. The new leaf buds sit right below it, so don't break them.
- Cut leggy branches back to just above a whorl of leaves or a dormant bud.
- Major renovation: cut one-third of the old stems back hard each year over 3 years.
Tools: Fingers, Bypass pruners
Fertilizing rhododendron
Spring feeding
When: 4โ8 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about Jun 7 โ Jul 5
- zones 6โ7: about May 13 โ Jun 10
- zones 8โ10: about Mar 25 โ Apr 22
A single spring feeding as growth starts covers most shrubs for the year.
- Scatter fertilizer at the label rate from near the stems out past the drip line, where the feeder roots are.
- Water it in thoroughly.
What to use: ๐ฟ Organic acid-loving plant food (e.g. Espoma Holly-tone 4-3-4) ยท Acid-forming fertilizer (e.g. Miracid 30-10-10 or ammonium sulfate)
Soil, compost & mulch for rhododendron
Refresh mulch
When: 2โ6 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about May 24 โ Jun 21
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 29 โ May 27
- zones 8โ10: about Mar 11 โ Apr 8
Mulch keeps roots cool and moist, suppresses weeds and slowly feeds the soil. Applying it after the soil warms lets roots wake up first.
- Spread 2โ3 in (5โ7 cm) of mulch over the root zone.
- Keep mulch 2โ3 in (5โ7 cm) away from stems and trunks. Mulch piled against bark invites rot and rodents.
- Don't go deeper than 3 in (7 cm) in total. Too much mulch suffocates roots.
What to use: ๐ฟ Pine straw or pine bark fines (slightly acidifying) ยท ๐ฟ Shredded hardwood or pine bark mulch
Frost & winter protection for rhododendron
Deep-water before the ground freezes
When: from 1 week before to 4 weeks after the first fall frost.
- zones 3โ5: about Sep 24 โ Oct 29
- zones 6โ7: about Oct 18 โ Nov 22
- zones 8โ10: about Nov 24 โ Dec 29
Evergreens keep losing water through their leaves all winter. Going into winter well hydrated prevents winter burn (brown, scorched foliage).
- If autumn has been dry, give a slow, deep soak: about 10 gallons (40 L) per inch of trunk diameter, or 1 in (2.5 cm) of water across the root zone.
- Repeat every 2โ3 weeks until the ground freezes.
- Optionally spray an anti-desiccant (e.g. Wilt-Pruf) on a mild day above 40ยฐF/4ยฐC.
Common rhododendron problems and how to fix them
Leaves curl in winter
Signs: Leaves roll tight and droop in cold weather.
What to do: Normal. It's how they protect themselves from cold. Worry only if leaves brown out (winter burn): water in fall and shelter from wind.
Black vine weevil
Signs: Notched leaf edges.
What to do: Adults feed at night. Beneficial nematodes drenched in the soil in spring or fall control the root-feeding larvae.
