Wisteria care guide: when & how to prune, fertilize and spray
Wisteria spp. ยท USDA zones 5โ9
Vigorous woody vine with spectacular spring flowers. It must be pruned twice a year (summer and winter) to flower well and stay in bounds. Asian species are invasive in some regions; native American wisteria is tamer.
โ๏ธ Sun
Full sun for flowering.
๐ง Water
Moderate.
๐ชฑ Soil
pH 6.0โ7.0. Average, well-drained. Don't fertilize. Nitrogen gives leaves instead of flowers. Bone meal can help shy bloomers.
How and when to prune wisteria
Winter spur prune
When: 3โ8 weeks before the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about Mar 15 โ Apr 19
- zones 6โ7: about Feb 18 โ Mar 25
- zones 8โ10: about Dec 31 โ Feb 4
Shortening side shoots to stubby spurs makes the plant form flower buds. You can easily tell the fat, round flower buds from slim leaf buds in winter.
- Cut back the side shoots you shortened last summer to 2โ3 buds (3โ4 in / 8โ10 cm) from the main framework.
- Keep the fat, round flower buds; slim, pointed buds are leaf buds.
- Remove tangled, dead or wayward stems, and tie in framework branches.
Summer prune of long whips
When: 10โ14 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about Jul 19 โ Aug 16
- zones 6โ7: about Jun 24 โ Jul 22
- zones 8โ10: about May 6 โ Jun 3
Cutting back the long green shoots about 2 months after flowering controls growth and helps flower buds form.
- Cut this year's long whippy side shoots back to 5โ6 leaves (about 12 in / 30 cm) from the main stem.
- Remove shoots heading toward gutters, siding or into trees.
- Repeat as needed through summer.
Fertilizing wisteria
Phosphorus for flowering (if needed)
When: from the last spring frost to 3 weeks after.
- zones 3โ5: about May 10โ31
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 15 โ May 6
- zones 8โ10: about Feb 25 โ Mar 18
Only for wisteria that won't bloom. Phosphorus without nitrogen can encourage flower buds.
- Scatter bone meal around the base and water it in. Keep lawn fertilizer away.
What to use: ๐ฟ Low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus feed (e.g. bone meal or 5-10-10)
Common wisteria problems and how to fix them
No flowers
Signs: Lush vine, no blooms.
What to do: Usually too much nitrogen (lawn fertilizer), too much shade, a seed-grown plant, or skipping the twice-yearly pruning.
