Clematis care guide: when & how to prune, fertilize and spray
Clematis spp. ยท USDA zones 4โ9
Flowering vines grouped by pruning needs. Group 1 blooms in spring on old wood, Group 2 has large flowers on old and new wood, and Group 3 blooms in summer on new wood. Check your plant tag, or watch when it blooms.
โ๏ธ Sun
Tops in sun, roots in shade. Shade the base with a low plant or stones.
๐ง Water
Regular, deep watering.
๐ชฑ Soil
pH 6.5โ7.5. Rich, well-drained. Plant 2โ3 in (5โ8 cm) deeper than in the pot to help it recover from clematis wilt.
How and when to prune clematis
Late-winter prune (Groups 2 and 3)
When: 1โ4 weeks before the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about Apr 12 โ May 3
- zones 6โ7: about Mar 18 โ Apr 8
- zones 8โ10: about Jan 28 โ Feb 18
Pruning matches how each group flowers. Getting it wrong costs a year of blooms.
- GROUP 3 (summer bloomers such as 'Jackmanii', sweet autumn and viticella types): cut ALL stems back to 12โ18 in (30โ45 cm), just above a pair of fat buds.
- GROUP 2 (big flowers in late spring, often again in late summer, e.g. 'Nelly Moser'): only remove dead wood and lightly trim stems back to the highest pair of plump buds.
- GROUP 1 (early spring, e.g. C. montana, C. armandii): don't prune now. Prune right after it flowers.
- Untangle and tie stems onto the support.
Prune Group 1 clematis after flowering
When: 2โ5 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about May 24 โ Jun 14
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 29 โ May 20
- zones 8โ10: about Mar 11 โ Apr 1
Spring-flowering clematis bloom on last year's wood, so prune only right after flowers fade.
- Trim to tidy and control size only, cutting back to a pair of buds. Skip this if your clematis isn't Group 1.
Fertilizing clematis
Spring feeding
When: from the last spring frost to 3 weeks after.
- zones 3โ5: about May 10โ31
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 15 โ May 6
- zones 8โ10: about Feb 25 โ Mar 18
A single feeding as new shoots emerge is enough for most perennials. Overfeeding makes them floppy.
- Scatter a balanced slow-release or organic fertilizer around the plant, or top-dress with 1 in (2โ3 cm) of compost, then water.
What to use: ๐ฟ Balanced organic granular fertilizer (e.g. Espoma Plant-tone 5-3-3) ยท ๐ฟ Organic rose food (e.g. Espoma Rose-tone 4-3-2)
Soil, compost & mulch for clematis
Refresh mulch
When: 2โ6 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about May 24 โ Jun 21
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 29 โ May 27
- zones 8โ10: about Mar 11 โ Apr 8
Mulch keeps roots cool and moist, suppresses weeds and slowly feeds the soil. Applying it after the soil warms lets roots wake up first.
- Spread 2โ3 in (5โ7 cm) of mulch over the root zone.
- Keep mulch 2โ3 in (5โ7 cm) away from stems and trunks. Mulch piled against bark invites rot and rodents.
- Don't go deeper than 3 in (7 cm) in total. Too much mulch suffocates roots.
What to use: ๐ฟ Shredded hardwood or pine bark mulch
Common clematis problems and how to fix them
Clematis wilt
Signs: Stems suddenly collapse and blacken.
What to do: Cut affected stems to the ground. Deep-planted clematis usually regrows from below the soil.
