Cherry care guide: when & how to prune, fertilize and spray
Prunus avium / P. cerasus ยท USDA zones 4โ8
Sweet and tart cherries fruit on long-lived spurs. They're best pruned lightly in dry weather to avoid bacterial canker and silver leaf. Birds are the biggest threat to the crop.
โ๏ธ Sun
Full sun.
๐ง Water
Moderate and even; too much water near harvest splits fruit.
๐ชฑ Soil
pH 6.0โ7.0. Very well-drained. Avoid wet sites.
How and when to prune cherry
Prune after harvest
When: 10โ14 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about Jul 19 โ Aug 16
- zones 6โ7: about Jun 24 โ Jul 22
- zones 8โ10: about May 6 โ Jun 3
Cherry wounds heal fastest in warm, dry weather, which greatly reduces bacterial canker and silver leaf infections compared with winter pruning.
- Remove dead, diseased and crossing branches, plus water sprouts.
- Thin crowded branches to let light into the center.
- Shorten overly tall leaders to a lower outward branch to keep cherries within reach.
- Disinfect tools between trees.
Thin young fruit
When: 5โ8 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about Jun 14 โ Jul 5
- zones 6โ7: about May 20 โ Jun 10
- zones 8โ10: about Apr 1โ22
Trees set far more fruit than they can size up. Thinning gives bigger, better-tasting fruit, prevents broken branches and stops the tree alternating between heavy and empty years.
- Wait until after the natural 'June drop', when fruit is about marble to walnut size.
- Twist or snip off fruit so the survivors are spaced only on heavy-cropping tart cherries; most sweet cherries need no thinning apart along the branch.
- Remove the smallest, damaged or misshapen fruit first.
- It feels wasteful, but you'll harvest about the same weight of much better fruit.
Spraying & disease prevention for cherry
Copper spray after leaf fall
When: 2โ5 weeks after the first fall frost.
- zones 3โ5: about Oct 15 โ Nov 5
- zones 6โ7: about Nov 8โ29
- zones 8โ10: about Dec 15 โ Jan 5
Protects leaf scars from bacterial canker infection over winter.
- Spray when about half the leaves have dropped, and again at full leaf drop.
What to use: ๐ฟ Copper fungicide (e.g. Bonide Captain Jack's Liquid Copper)
Frost & winter protection for cherry
Net against birds
When: 6โ8 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about Jun 21 โ Jul 5
- zones 6โ7: about May 27 โ Jun 10
- zones 8โ10: about Apr 8โ22
Birds can strip a tree in a day as cherries turn color.
- Drape bird netting over the tree as soon as fruit begins to color, and secure it at the trunk so birds can't get underneath.
Common cherry problems and how to fix them
