Blueberry care guide: when & how to prune, fertilize and spray

Vaccinium corymbosum / V. ashei ยท USDA zones 3โ€“9

Long-lived fruiting shrubs that must have very acidic soil (pH 4.5โ€“5.5). Prune every winter to renew old canes.

โ˜€๏ธ Sun

Full sun.

๐Ÿ’ง Water

Shallow roots: 1โ€“2 in (2.5โ€“5 cm) a week, more during fruit set. Rainwater is best if your tap water is hard.

๐Ÿชฑ Soil

pH 4.5โ€“5.5. Loose, sandy or high in organic matter, well-drained. Mix peat moss or pine bark into the planting bed. Use elemental sulfur to lower pH over months.

How and when to prune blueberry

Prune

Winter renewal prune

When: 2โ€“6 weeks before the last spring frost.

  • zones 3โ€“5: about Mar 29 โ€“ Apr 26
  • zones 6โ€“7: about Mar 4 โ€“ Apr 1
  • zones 8โ€“10: about Jan 14 โ€“ Feb 11

The best berries grow on 2- to 5-year-old canes. Removing the oldest each year keeps a steady supply of productive wood.

  1. Young plants (first 2 years): rub off flower buds so the plant puts energy into roots.
  2. Remove dead, broken and low, ground-sweeping branches.
  3. Cut 1โ€“2 of the oldest, grayest canes (more than 6 years old or thicker than 1.5 in / 4 cm) right to the ground.
  4. Keep 6โ€“10 healthy canes of mixed ages.
  5. Thin weak, twiggy growth at the cane tips.

Tools: Bypass pruners, Loppers

Fertilizing blueberry

Fertilize

Acid feeding at bud break

When: from 2 weeks before to 1 week after the last spring frost, then every 6 weeks (2 times a season).

  • zones 3โ€“5: about Apr 26 โ€“ May 17
  • zones 6โ€“7: about Apr 1โ€“22
  • zones 8โ€“10: about Feb 11 โ€“ Mar 4

Blueberries need nitrogen in ammonium form; nitrate fertilizers can harm them. Split the feeding between bud break and 6 weeks later.

  1. Scatter acid fertilizer in a ring around the plant, out to the drip line.
  2. Avoid nitrate-based fertilizers, and avoid manure, which raises pH.
  3. Water it in.

What to use: ๐ŸŒฟ Organic acid-loving plant food (e.g. Espoma Holly-tone 4-3-4) ยท ๐ŸŒฟ Elemental sulfur or aluminum-free soil acidifier, to lower pH ยท Acid-forming fertilizer (e.g. Miracid 30-10-10 or ammonium sulfate)

Soil, compost & mulch for blueberry

Soil & mulch

Test the soil (every 3 years)

When: 3โ€“8 weeks before the last spring frost.

  • zones 3โ€“5: about Mar 15 โ€“ Apr 19
  • zones 6โ€“7: about Feb 18 โ€“ Mar 25
  • zones 8โ€“10: about Dec 31 โ€“ Feb 4

This plant prefers a pH of 4.5โ€“5.5. A soil test tells you whether you need lime, sulfur or extra nutrients, so you aren't guessing.

  1. Take 6โ€“8 small samples from the root zone, 4โ€“6 in (10โ€“15 cm) deep, using a clean trowel.
  2. Mix them in a clean bucket, let the soil air-dry, and send about 2 cups to your local extension office or a soil lab. A home kit works but is less accurate.
  3. Follow the lime or sulfur amounts in the report. Change pH slowly: no more than 1 unit a year.

Tools: Clean trowel, Plastic bucket, Soil test kit or lab mailer

Soil & mulch

Refresh mulch

When: 2โ€“6 weeks after the last spring frost.

  • zones 3โ€“5: about May 24 โ€“ Jun 21
  • zones 6โ€“7: about Apr 29 โ€“ May 27
  • zones 8โ€“10: about Mar 11 โ€“ Apr 8

Mulch keeps roots cool and moist, suppresses weeds and slowly feeds the soil. Applying it after the soil warms lets roots wake up first.

  1. Spread 2โ€“3 in (5โ€“7 cm) of mulch over the root zone.
  2. Keep mulch 2โ€“3 in (5โ€“7 cm) away from stems and trunks. Mulch piled against bark invites rot and rodents.
  3. Don't go deeper than 3 in (7 cm) in total. Too much mulch suffocates roots.

What to use: ๐ŸŒฟ Pine straw or pine bark fines (slightly acidifying) ยท ๐ŸŒฟ Shredded hardwood or pine bark mulch

Frost & winter protection for blueberry

Protect

Net against birds

When: 7โ€“9 weeks after the last spring frost.

  • zones 3โ€“5: about Jun 28 โ€“ Jul 12
  • zones 6โ€“7: about Jun 3โ€“17
  • zones 8โ€“10: about Apr 15โ€“29

Birds start picking as soon as berries blush. Net before then.

  1. Cover the bushes with netting on a frame, sealed at the bottom.

Common blueberry problems and how to fix them

Yellow leaves

Signs: Leaves yellow between the veins.

What to do: Almost always pH too high. Test the soil, add sulfur, and use ammonium sulfate or acid fertilizer.

Mummy berry

Signs: Shriveled, gray, hard berries.

What to do: Rake and remove mummies. Refresh mulch in spring to bury any you missed.

Birds

Signs: Ripe berries disappear.

What to do: Net before berries turn blue.
