Hosta care guide: when & how to prune, fertilize and spray
Hosta spp. ยท USDA zones 3โ9
Shade-loving foliage perennial. Easy to grow apart from slugs and deer.
โ๏ธ Sun
Part to full shade. Gold and blue types tolerate some morning sun.
๐ง Water
Even moisture. Leaf edges scorch in drought.
๐ชฑ Soil
pH 6.0โ7.5. Rich, moist, well-drained. Compost yearly.
Fertilizing hosta
Spring feeding
When: from the last spring frost to 3 weeks after.
- zones 3โ5: about May 10โ31
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 15 โ May 6
- zones 8โ10: about Feb 25 โ Mar 18
A single feeding as new shoots emerge is enough for most perennials. Overfeeding makes them floppy.
- Scatter a balanced slow-release or organic fertilizer around the plant, or top-dress with 1 in (2โ3 cm) of compost, then water.
What to use: ๐ฟ Balanced organic granular fertilizer (e.g. Espoma Plant-tone 5-3-3) ยท ๐ฟ Finished compost or composted manure
Spraying & disease prevention for hosta
Early slug control
When: from 1 week before to 2 weeks after the last spring frost, then every 3 weeks (3 times a season).
- zones 3โ5: about May 3โ24
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 8โ29
- zones 8โ10: about Feb 18 โ Mar 11
Treating as shoots emerge stops slug populations before they build up.
- Scatter iron phosphate bait lightly around the plants (it's safe around pets) and reapply after heavy rain.
What to use: ๐ฟ Iron phosphate slug bait (e.g. Sluggo)
Soil, compost & mulch for hosta
Refresh mulch
When: 2โ6 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about May 24 โ Jun 21
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 29 โ May 27
- zones 8โ10: about Mar 11 โ Apr 8
Mulch keeps roots cool and moist, suppresses weeds and slowly feeds the soil. Applying it after the soil warms lets roots wake up first.
- Spread 2โ3 in (5โ7 cm) of mulch over the root zone.
- Keep mulch 2โ3 in (5โ7 cm) away from stems and trunks. Mulch piled against bark invites rot and rodents.
- Don't go deeper than 3 in (7 cm) in total. Too much mulch suffocates roots.
What to use: ๐ฟ Shredded hardwood or pine bark mulch
Other care for hosta
Autumn cleanup of fallen leaves
When: from the first fall frost to 4 weeks after.
- zones 3โ5: about Oct 1โ29
- zones 6โ7: about Oct 25 โ Nov 22
- zones 8โ10: about Dec 1โ29
Spores of slug eggs and leaf diseases (hosta leaves turn to mush after frost) overwinter on fallen leaves and splash back up in spring. Removing them is the single best way to prevent next year's outbreak.
- Rake up and remove fallen leaves and dropped fruit from under the plant.
- Bag diseased material or put it in the trash. Don't compost it unless your pile gets hot (140ยฐF/60ยฐC+).
- Cut out any dead or obviously diseased twigs you can see.
Tools: Rake, Bypass pruners
Divide crowded clumps (every 3โ4 years)
When: from 1 week before to 3 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about May 3โ31
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 8 โ May 6
- zones 8โ10: about Feb 18 โ Mar 18
Spring division, as the shoots poke up, is easiest and does the least damage.
- Only needed if the clump is crowded, flowering less, or dead in the center.
- Dig around the clump and lift it with a fork.
- Split it into fist-sized pieces with a sharp spade or knife, each with roots and shoots.
- Replant at the same depth, water well, and share the extras.
Tools: Spade, Garden fork
Common hosta problems and how to fix them
Slugs and snails
Signs: Ragged holes in leaves, slime trails.
What to do: Iron phosphate bait (e.g. Sluggo) in early spring as shoots emerge, beer traps, hand-picking at night.
Deer
Signs: Leaves eaten to the stalks overnight.
What to do: Repellent sprays rotated monthly, or fencing.
Hosta virus X
Signs: Mottled, blotchy or puckered leaf color.
What to do: No cure. Remove the plant and disinfect tools.
