Azalea care guide: when & how to prune, fertilize and spray
Rhododendron spp. (azaleas) ยท USDA zones 5โ9
Spring-flowering, acid-loving shrubs with shallow roots. Prune only right after bloom, keep roots cool and moist under mulch, and feed lightly with acid fertilizer.
โ๏ธ Sun
Dappled shade or morning sun. Hot afternoon sun scorches them.
๐ง Water
Shallow roots dry out fast. Water deeply in dry spells, about 1 in (2.5 cm) a week.
๐ชฑ Soil
pH 4.5โ6.0. Loose, acidic, rich in organic matter, sharply drained. Hates clay. Add pine bark fines and compost. Use soil sulfur if pH is above 6. Plant with the root ball slightly above grade.
How and when to prune azalea
Prune right after flowering
When: 3โ7 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about May 31 โ Jun 28
- zones 6โ7: about May 6 โ Jun 3
- zones 8โ10: about Mar 18 โ Apr 15
This shrub sets next year's flower buds over the summer. Pruning within a few weeks after the flowers fade gives the most blooms next year. Prune later and you cut off the buds.
- Wait until the last flowers have faded.
- Remove dead, damaged and crossing branches first.
- Renewal-prune: cut one-third of the oldest, thickest stems right down to the ground. Over three years this replaces the whole shrub with vigorous young wood.
- Shorten overly long stems to an outward-facing bud or side branch to shape the shrub. Avoid shearing it into a ball.
- Azaleas respond well to shaping. Cut individual stems back to a leaf cluster to keep plants compact.
- For Encore reblooming azaleas, finish pruning by midsummer.
Tools: Bypass pruners, Hand shears
Fertilizing azalea
Spring feeding
When: 3โ7 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about May 31 โ Jun 28
- zones 6โ7: about May 6 โ Jun 3
- zones 8โ10: about Mar 18 โ Apr 15
A single spring feeding as growth starts covers most shrubs for the year.
- Scatter fertilizer at the label rate from near the stems out past the drip line, where the feeder roots are.
- Water it in thoroughly.
What to use: ๐ฟ Organic acid-loving plant food (e.g. Espoma Holly-tone 4-3-4) ยท Acid-forming fertilizer (e.g. Miracid 30-10-10 or ammonium sulfate)
Stop fertilizing for the season
When: 6โ8 weeks before the first fall frost.
- zones 3โ5: about Aug 6โ20
- zones 6โ7: about Aug 30 โ Sep 13
- zones 8โ10: about Oct 6โ20
Late feeding pushes soft new growth that won't harden off before frost and gets killed back.
- Don't apply any more fertilizer until spring. If you were planning one last feeding, do it now or skip it.
- Keep watering as normal. Well-watered plants handle winter better.
Spraying & disease prevention for azalea
Check for lace bugs
When: 5โ7 weeks after the last spring frost, then every 8 weeks (2 times a season).
- zones 3โ5: about Jun 14โ28
- zones 6โ7: about May 20 โ Jun 3
- zones 8โ10: about Apr 1โ15
Lace bugs hatch in late spring and can bleach a whole shrub's leaves by summer.
- Turn over a few leaves. Look for tiny lacy-winged insects and black specks.
- If you find them, spray the leaf undersides thoroughly with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil (summer rate).
What to use: ๐ฟ Insecticidal soap (e.g. Safer Brand) ยท ๐ฟ Horticultural / dormant oil (e.g. Bonide All Seasons Oil) ยท Acetamiprid (e.g. Ortho Flower, Fruit & Vegetable Insect Killer)
Soil, compost & mulch for azalea
Test the soil (every 3 years)
When: 3โ8 weeks before the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about Mar 15 โ Apr 19
- zones 6โ7: about Feb 18 โ Mar 25
- zones 8โ10: about Dec 31 โ Feb 4
This plant prefers a pH of 4.5โ6.0. A soil test tells you whether you need lime, sulfur or extra nutrients, so you aren't guessing.
- Take 6โ8 small samples from the root zone, 4โ6 in (10โ15 cm) deep, using a clean trowel.
- Mix them in a clean bucket, let the soil air-dry, and send about 2 cups to your local extension office or a soil lab. A home kit works but is less accurate.
- Follow the lime or sulfur amounts in the report. Change pH slowly: no more than 1 unit a year.
Tools: Clean trowel, Plastic bucket, Soil test kit or lab mailer
Refresh mulch
When: 2โ6 weeks after the last spring frost.
- zones 3โ5: about May 24 โ Jun 21
- zones 6โ7: about Apr 29 โ May 27
- zones 8โ10: about Mar 11 โ Apr 8
Mulch keeps roots cool and moist, suppresses weeds and slowly feeds the soil. Applying it after the soil warms lets roots wake up first.
- Spread 2โ3 in (5โ7 cm) of mulch over the root zone.
- Keep mulch 2โ3 in (5โ7 cm) away from stems and trunks. Mulch piled against bark invites rot and rodents.
- Don't go deeper than 3 in (7 cm) in total. Too much mulch suffocates roots.
What to use: ๐ฟ Pine straw or pine bark fines (slightly acidifying) ยท ๐ฟ Shredded hardwood or pine bark mulch
Common azalea problems and how to fix them
Lace bugs
Signs: Leaves speckled pale yellow or white on top, with black tar-like dots underneath.
What to do: Spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil on the leaf undersides in late spring and again in summer. Plants in full sun suffer most.
Chlorosis
Signs: Yellow leaves with green veins.
What to do: The soil pH is too high, so the plant can't take up iron. Acidify with sulfur and apply chelated iron for a quick fix.
Phytophthora root rot
Signs: Wilting, browning and dieback in wet soils.
What to do: Improve drainage and plant high. There's no cure for badly affected plants.
